Science and Social Studies Activities for November

Science and Social Studies are my very favorite things to teach!

However, it's so hard to find time in the schedule to teach these. But I manage to find time by overlapping with other subjects, such as reading, and including science and social studies concepts with the calendar!

I'm determined to make your life easier, and I hope this resource does the job!  I've taken many of the important second grade skills, mixed in a few November special days, and came up with these activities! There are close reading activities, mini-books, sorting activities, and even a S.T.E.M. activity to do with leftover Halloween candy corn! It's guaranteed fun for the kids, easy for the teachers, and valuable learning experiences!

Here are a couple of my favorite parts:

Show Your Patriotism!

I'm sitting here watching the annual 4th of July Boston Pops Concert and swelling with pride for my country. It seems these concerts just keep getting better and better! Back in the old days, we used to drive down to Boston, spend all day saving our spots on the Esplande, then watch the concert live. The traffic and crowds never bothered us, it was always worth it!

Happy Independence Day! This post has a patriotic brain breaks freebie that can be used for any USA holiday!

Nowadays I sit in my living room and watch on TV. It's not quite as exciting as watching it live, but it sure ois mre convenient!

In honor of the holiday, I've created some brain breaks with a patriotic theme.

I do love to include anything the kids are learning as brain breaks. I usually manage to include seasonal or holiday brain breaks when I can. These Patriotic Brain Breaks can be used for any Patriotic holiday: Constitution Day, Veterans Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, or Independence Day!

A Couple of Freebies for Veterans Day

Somehow Halloween is over, we have Veterans Day in less than a week!

A Couple of Freebies for Veterans Day! You'll find a writing paper freebie as well as a freebie to help children keep track of the different patriotic holidays!

I've rounded up a couple of freebies to share with you!

Here's a collection of paper for writing thank you letters to veterans!  After a lesson or two on what veterans are and how they help us, I find letter writing to be a nice way to culminate the activities.

I've noticed my little second graders often confuse the different patriotic holidays, so I made this freebie to help them keep track of President's Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Constitution Day, and Veterans Day. It's really helped them keep track of which holiday is which!
