I teach second grade. Reading to children...Vicki,<br /><br />I teach second grade. Reading to children is a step that comes before teaching reading. Children need to understand the language and understand how stories work in order to have success in reading. It's the best thing parents can do for their children in order to lead to success in reading. As a former special ed teacher who worked for 24 years with children whose teachers did not know how to teach them to read, I am concerned with your statement that simply reading to children is the best way to teach them to read. If that were true, we wouldn't have over 70% of 8th graders in this country below grade level.
