I am very intelligent!

This is where this "self-affirmation" stuff gets hard. As I've mentioned before, I've always been uncomfortable at "tooting my own horn."

But I've always been smart. I learned to read early, always did well in school, and happen to have a lot of information in my brain. Although there were a few years the nuns gave me Cs in Handwriting and it kept me off the honor roll,(grrr!) I've always had good grades and did well on tests. I was the kid in middle school science class who got 100% on the test and totally ruined the scale for the rest of the class. I was the "Hermione" who knew all the answers. I was in the Honor Society in high school and the President's List in college. I graduated summa cum laude.

One of my earliest memories was this comment I overheard my mother telling my father.

"It's too bad Sally is smart."

It sounds a little strange, but this is pretty much what she meant:

"It's too bad Sally's only strength is her intelligence. She's not outgoing or popular, and she's not athletic. All she has is smart. She'll never get a husband if all she has is smart."

This was the late 50s/ early 60s, where a woman's lot in life was to find a husband. Interesting that this came from my mom, who was a working mom back in the 50s. (She was a 5th grade teacher.)

In some ways, she was correct. I wasn't outgoing or popular, I was painfully shy. (I still am, but I've learned to pretend I'm not!) I was definitely NOT athletic. And I was indeed smart!

But I have a whole lot of other strengths that she never noticed, or encouraged, such as acting, singing, and dancing, to name a few!

About the picture:  Here's one of those "other talents" I have, other than "smart." This picture was taken 17 years ago (2001) when my daughter and I were in a production of The King and I. This was my daughter's very first show, and I was thrilled to be in it with her! I played "Lady Thiang," the King's head wife and mother of Crown Prince Chulalongkorn. I got to sing this awesome song, which always reminds me of my dad: He is Wonderful! (This isn't me, it's a clip from the movie.)
