Summer Piles

I've been out of school a little over a week, and this is what my living room looks like:

Dreadful, isn't it?  Yes, I took all my books home from my classroom this year.  Those tubs and baskets are all filled with my collection of classroom books.  Yes, I know, I have too many.

Lucky, Christina from Bunting, Books and Bainbridge is having a Summer Piles linky party!

I'm hoping I can count all these books as a summer pile.  It's more like mountains taking up a good portion of my living room!

I'm also linking up with Lorraine from Fabulous Fourth Grade Froggies with her "To do before the first day of school" linky party.

Well, here's my plan:  I'm going to get rid of some, and sort the rest so that not all the books are on the shelves at the same time.  With too many books, the kids are overwhelmed, which makes it harder for them to choose Just Right books.

I'm planning to put sets of books out for each month, so that all the books will be cycled in by the end of the year.  Of course, some books will have to stay longer, since not all kids are at the same reading level at the same time of the year.

I've always had some books organized by level, for the kids that really struggle with finding the right level.  Then I have other books organized by genre, subject matter, and/ or author.  Since books in series are very popular at this level, I have several categories there, too.

Yes, that pile has sat in my living room for over a week, but I haven't completely ignored them.  I have to walk around them on my way to the kitchen.  I have to shoo the cat when she climbs up on them.  Plus, I've been planning my organization.

My room will continue the SPORTS theme that I had last year.  I've been working on labels for my book tubs with sports pictures.  Here's what I have so far!

I suspect these will make an appearance on Teachers Pay Teachers when I'm done.  So far I've got 24 labels.  I'm sure I'll be needing more, but this is what I've got so far.

I'm hoping the sports pictures will help the children remember where to put the books back when they're done with them!  That's not easy for them, but I'm hoping with fewer books, there will be less confusion on the proper home for each book!

I'd love to hear your ideas for categories as well as sports for the decorations!

Don't forget to check out the linky parties at Bunting, Books and Bainbridge

  1. What a great idea! I think my classroom library could use a purging as well! I may need to add that job to my overloaded "to do" list! Happy organizing!

  2. Oh Sally, you are so brave! I haven't wanted to tackle my classroom library because I have to do exactly the same thing!
But I'll have to clear the living room first because there isn't enough room for the "book project" yet...
I wonder if teachers are genetically programmed to pile things up?

  3. I am currently getting started on the same challenge! My hubby is having to deal with my piles everywhere!!!! Hopefully, next school year I can get started out right. I am also trying out a free iPad app to catalog all the books I have, so I don't buy too many copies!

  6. My husband tells me all the time that I am a PILOT... I pile it here and I pile it there. Procrastinating in purging my books and supplies.

  7. Ugh, good luck with the library! I agree - I used to have too many books in the library and the kids couldn't find what they wanted to read. Weeding out the unread stuff is great!

  8. PART of my library is also part of my piles! Man looking at my piles and everyone else's (and why they brought them home) makes me realize I need to get moving on my to do list! Good luck!

  9. Oooohhhh, I have so much trouble purging books. It almost seems like a crime. I am going to have to bite the bullet and go through my library, too. Maybe next summer. . .
