Happy Birthday to Me, and a Freebie for You!!

Well, my birthday is just about here.  I was born the day after Disneyland (in California) opened.  (If you look it up, you can figure out my age.)  Trust me, it was a very long time ago.

Today I went to the Apple store at the mall, and bought myself a birthday present... my very own ipad!!  I bought an ipad 3 in black.  It's beautiful!!  I'm still working on how to use it.  I think it will take a while before I'm really handy with it.

I'm definitely open for suggestions on ways to use it in the classroom.

Of course, this all got me thinking about birthdays and my students.  As a second grade teacher, birthdays are pretty important to my students!  I have a little tradition that I've had for years in my classroom.

Rather than giving each student a book for their birthday, I have the children choose a book to give to the class library.  The child gets to bring the book home to share it, and brings the book back when he/she is done to be put into the class collection of books.  The child's name will always live inside the cover of the book, so in a way, the child will always be "a part of my classroom", even long after they're gone.

Trust me, they remember this, and come back to my classroom years later, still remembering the book that is in their honor. As I sort my class library year to year, I peek inside the covers to remember those special people who are still a part of my life.

If you click HERE (or the image), you can download the materials I use for my birthday tradition!

I give them a pencil and a book mark, too.  They get to keep those
forever!

    1. Erv,

Yes, I usually get the books with the Bonus Points from Scholastic Orders. Sometimes I find them other places, but it's usually the Book Orders.

  7. We used to do birthday books in our school library when I was a kid too. I love that idea. I never thought to use it in my classroom too. It could help justify all the books I buy AND my students would love being honored and remember that way. Thanks for sharing your freebie!

  10. Happy Birthday Sally! I love this idea! I was looking for something new to do for birthdays this year and you may have solved that for me. I am so excited for you and your new iPad. I just got one yesterday. I am part of a team of trainers in my district who will be training other teachers on how to use iPads in the classroom. I have a Pinterest board with some cool iPad /classroom resources. If you want to follow that board, here is my pin board Fun With Ipads

  11. Happy Birthday, Sally. I remember watching Disney's Wonderful World of Color (is that the right title?) with Walt Disney and "visiting" Disneyland on Sunday evenings. So I hear ya! Anywhoooo...great birthday idea. I am moving to 3rd grade after 16 years in 4th and was looking for something different to celebrate the birthdays. I had my kiddos choose a "birthday book" but I like the idea of "paying it forward" and leaving something for those who follow! Thanks for sharing your ideas...and enjoy your special day.

  12. I'm moving to 2nd from first this year with most of my kiddos in tact. I'm looking for a new tradition too. I'm wondering how the children pick their books. Do you have a stash that they choose from? Happy Birthday! My favorite new app,(I'm hoping it will work the way I've envisioned) is Book Retriever. It helps you keep track of the books in your class library when children check them out!
    Enjoy your iPad!

I have a stash of books that I get with bonus points from the book orders, and the kids pick from that. A couple of people have mentioned Book Retriever, I'll have to look into that!

  27. I do something similar...........students bring a new or gently used book wrapped to class. We unwarp it and read it. I put a picture of them holding the book with their name and date. Some of my kiddos love to come back and see their book years later! I've had brothers and sisters look for their sibling as soon as they come in my room. These books are by far the most popular books during silent reading time! I also bring one on my birthday. This "gift" lasts so much longer than a cupcake! Parents love it!
